Prahran Football Club

The Prahran Football Club joined the VAFA in 1999 after a three year hiatus where the club hadn’t played a game as Prahran since 1994 in the VFA. Prahran reformed in the VAFA amalgamating with Southbank. Prahran Football Club draws on a proud history in the VFA and many famous names from Australian rules football have played at the club inlcuding Kevin Sheedy, Kevin Rose, Jim Stynes and Brian Taylor. Prahran didn’t enjoy success in the VAFA until the merger with Assumption.

Prahran merged with the Assumption Old Collegians in 2011 with the club gaining strength from the Assumption connection to win the 2011 Division 3 premiership as the champion team going through the season undefeated. The following year they finished runners up in Division 2.

Assumption Old Collegians were a club in the VAFA from 1964-82, whilst in the years 1978-81 they were a part of the Combined Country Colleges. During this period Assumption finished runners-up in their first season in F Section and they won the 1967 E Section premiership. Two more runners-up finishes had them reach B Section by 1973. Despite reforming as Assumption for the 1982 season after a failed Country Colleges concept, Assumption disbanded until they were re-introduced to the VAFA via a relationship with Ivanhoe Amateurs. Ivanhoe played under the name Ivanhoe-Assumption from 1999-2007. This failed relationship led to the successful pairing with Prahran.

Southbank (1994-98) were themselves a combination of two long running VAFA clubs, Commonwealth Bank (1947-90) and State Savings Bank (1927-90). Southbank was born from a name change from the merged State Commonwealth Bank club (1991-93) due to the bank withdrawing their sponsorship. The two football clubs merged when the banks merged in time for the 1991 season. Both State Savings Bank and Commonwealth Bank were big clubs in the VAFA particularly through the 1950s when both clubs were in A Section and produced many state players. Commonwealth Bank’s Ken Jorgensen is a Big V Club Champion and he also went on to umpire many VAFA games. State Savings Bank were runner up in A section three times in the 1930s. When Prahran ceased operating in the VFA, many Prahran players and officials aligned with Southbank in the VFA and by start of the 1999 season Southbank had changed to become the relaunched Prahran Amateur Football club.

With all this in mind, the current Prahran Assumption draws its history from five clubs. After suffering relegation from Division 1 in 2016, the club bounced back emphatically by winning both the seniors and reserves premierships in Division 2 in 2017.

They play at Toorak Park where Prahran had played since 1899. The below tables document all the premierships and medallists the clubs have won.
