Brunswick Football Club

The first incarnation of North Old Boys/ St Patrick’s College can be traced to the 1932 season when North Melbourne Christian Brothers College were entered into the VAFA in D Section. In 1939 St Patrick’s College OB joined the VAFA as a separate club. In the same year, North Melbourne CBC were expelled from the VAFA and as a result disbanded. The reason for their expulsion was that they played an unregistered player who was subsequently reported and upon facing the tribunal all was revealed. The VAFA administration at the time were hard task masters, and banned both the player and the club from competition. It took until 1963 for North Melbourne CBC to reform. The VAFA then witnessed one of the fastest ascensions they had seen as North won the 1964 E Section premiership, the 1965 D Section, were runners up in C Section in 1966, and again runners-up in B Section in 1967. North Melbourne CBC became simply North Old Boys and this change in name saw the club enter into it’s most memorable period. Captain-coached by Big V Champion, Shane Maguire, NOBs – as they were affectionately known, played in four A Section Grand Finals in a row, yet they only managed to win one, the 1976 decider against St Bernard’s. North Old Boys, won the 1982 A Section premiership, but again lost the grand final in 1981 and 1986. They produced numerous state players including Mauro Borcich and another Big V Champion and later President of the VAFA Bruno Conti. In 2005, North Old Boys aligned themselves with St Patrick’s Old Collegians of Ballarat. The alliance allow St Pat’s to have a presence in the VAFA again after they had also re-entered the VAFA on two separate occasions after the War. Playing with from 1951 to 1955, and between 1964 and 1977, St Pat’s were somewhat of a dominant force in their third period as a club, winning the D Section premiership in 1967, plus two E Section flags in 1965 and 1971, and the F Section premiership in 1964. Since the combination of NOBs and St Pat’s took place for the 2006 season, the combine won the 2012 Division 1 premiership. In a bid to embody their geographical area to a greater degree, NOBS/St Pat’s officially changed their name to Brunswick NOBSPC at the end of the 2015 season. At the conclusion of the 2017 season, they changed their name again to Brunswick Football Club. The men’s team remained NOBS while the women, who joined the Association from the VWFL in inaugural women’s season, remained as the Renegades.
